2018 Package of the Year Award for Students
University of Wisconsin-STOUT’s Ryan Knudtson wins 2018 Package of the Year for Students From the Association for Dressings & Sauces for his Break and Shake Dressing Packet
(October 23, 2018) ATLANTA, GA – The Association for Dressings & Sauces (ADS) named Ryan Knudtson of the University of Wisconsin-Stout as the winner of the third annual Package of the Year Award for Students, for his Break and Shake Dressing Packet. The award was announced at the ADS Annual Meeting held October 13-15 at the Westin Denver, in Denver, Colorado.
“The goal of this design was to create a package that was convenient for the
user, transparent so all ingredients can be seen, but also provide a fun
experience. With plain yogurt or olive oil on one wide and spices on the other, this design allows consumers to easily “break and shake” the package to make a healthy dressing or sauce on the go,” said Knudtson. The Package of the Year Award for Students is presented by ADS to recognize and celebrate new and unique dressing, sauce and condiment-related packaging designed by college/university students. The contest is open to undergraduate and graduate students in the United States majoring in a packaging discipline at a college or university. Nominations for the award were received and members of ADS’ Packaging Committee cast their votes for the package deemed most innovative. Mr. Knudtson takes home the cash award of $1,500.
“On behalf of all packaging students, I would like to thank the ADS for sponsoring this student competition and all that you do for the industry. This award signifies an investment in my future career and the packaging industry at large,” said Knudtson. (pictured here)
Ryan has a history of winning during his college career. In addition to this year’s ADS award, UW-Stout awarded Ryan the Outstanding Co-op Student of the Year Award, and second place finishes two years running in the Student Flexible Packaging Design Challenge. Robert Meisner, packaging program director at UW-Stout, had this to say about Knudtson: “I am very excited for Ryan for being recognized by the Association for Dressings & Sauces for his hard work and creativity. I am grateful for trade associations that sponsor student design competitions which allows the students to apply the skills obtained at school and highlight their ability to industry professionals. Thank you for recognizing Ryan, he is a very deserving young man.”
A member of the University of Wisconsin System, University of Wisconsin-Stout has nearly 10,000 students. Founded in 1891, the college was named after its founder, lumber magnate James Huff Stout. UW-Stout is one of only a handful of schools in the U.S that offer a B.S. in Packaging.
The 2019 contest is already underway, with the Package of the Year for Students entry deadline as March 11, 2019.
